MAAR Members,
The MAAR Board of Directors recently passed two policy statements in response to the ongoing conversation around a data center moratorium for the City of Memphis. MAAR believes that data centers can be properly regulated without the enactment of a moratorium. Moratoriums infringe on property rights and create uncertainty across the economic development landscape. Proper regulation can increase economic development while protecting nearby property owners and our water and power infrastructure.
We understand the concerns that have been raised about data center projects. Issues like noise, construction, traffic, and water usage should absolutely be addressed. However, we believe that those concerns can and should be managed through the normal planning process.
We appreciate the thoughtful feedback we have received from members on all sides of the issue. As always, MAAR remains committed to advocating for policies that support private property rights, responsible growth, and strong communities.
