Take steps to protect yourself and your business.

Member safety is our top priority – but safety doesn't just mean avoiding scams and fraud. As professionals who engage with the public, it's equally as important to trust your instincts and be prepared to end interactions that make you uncomfortable, threaten your security or negatively impact your well-being.

A few reminders:

  • Use professional communication platforms when possible. Consider using Zoom, Google Meet, or other business communication tools rather than sharing your personal phone number or using personal video-calling features.
  • Set boundaries. You never have to continue a conversation, video call or interaction that makes you uncomfortable.
  • Trust your instincts. If a client’s behavior, requests, or communication feels inappropriate or raises a red flag, it’s okay to end the interaction.
  • Protect your personal information. Be mindful about sharing your home address, personal phone number, daily schedule or other information that could compromise your privacy or safety.
  • Meet clients strategically. When possible, meet in public places, let someone know where you are and consider using a buddy system for unfamiliar clients or situations that feel uncertain.
  • Document concerning behavior. Save messages, emails or other communications that may be relevant if you need to report the behavior.
  • Speak up and seek support. If an interaction crosses a line or you feel threatened, disengage and contact your broker, local authorities or another appropriate resource.

Remember: You don't have to be polite at the expense of your safety. If something doesn't feel right, end the interaction and get help.
