Since the summer of 2018, the MAAR Grant Task Force has been meeting with different community partners discussing the issues surrounding Fair & Affordable Housing for all families in Memphis and the surrounding areas.
At the February 2019 MAAR Board of Directors meeting, the Directors approved a Fair & Affordable Housing Coalition with MAAR, United Housing, Inc., BLDG Memphis, West Tennessee Home Builders Association and Tennessee Housing Development Agency. The coalition is being chaired by Lauren Wiuff and Brenda Hampton. The focus of the coalition is on legislation, education and volunteerism.
To help make a bigger impact on this issue affecting so many families in Memphis and the surrounding areas, the coalition is pursuing grant opportunities with the National Association of REALTORS®.
Earlier this week, Mayor Jim Strickland delivered his proposed budget to the Memphis City Council. Mayor Strickland's proposed budget includes a new initiative called the Memphis Affordable Housing Trust Fund (MAHTF). The MAHTF will accelerate the development of new and rehabbed multifamily and single-family housing. MAAR and our coalition partners strongly support the MAHTF and are hopeful the Council will approve this exciting new initiative.
