In accordance with the Executive Order issued on Jan. 28 by President Biden, the U.S. Dept. of Health and Human Services (HHS) has announced a Special Enrollment Period (SEP) for individuals and families for Marketplace coverage in response to the COVID-19 Public Health Emergency. This SEP will allow those in states with Marketplaces served by the HealthCare.gov platform to enroll in 2021 health insurance coverage.
The SEP will run Feb. 15 – May 15 and will be available for anyone who is eligible to use the Marketplace, including those who are currently uninsured as well as those who already have coverage through HealthCare.gov and would prefer to pick a different plan. Coverage is prospective, with coverage beginning the first day of the month following the date of plan selection.
Starting Feb. 15, consumers seeking to take advantage of the new SEP can find out if they are eligible by visiting HealthCare.gov. If you need help navigating the site, HealthCare.gov offers a step-by-step guide to using the Marketplace and choosing a plan. You can find local help at LocalHelp.HealthCare.gov or by calling the Marketplace Call Center at 1.800.318.2596. The call is toll free and assistance is available in 150 languages.
