About MAAR
The Memphis Area Association of REALTORS® (MAAR) is Tennessee's largest local REALTOR® organization, encompassing Shelby, Fayette, Tipton, Hardin, Hardeman and McNairy Counties. The association was founded in 1910 by eight charter members and has operated continuously for 95 years. MAAR's focus is serving and representing real estate professionals as well as providing real estate information to the general public.
Over 4,000 REALTORS® and REALTOR-ASSOCIATES® specializing in every aspect of the real estate profession, including residential, commercial, industrial, property management and appraisal services hold membership in MAAR, representing approximately 400 firms. MAAR is governed by a President and a 13-member Board of Directors who are elected annually by the membership. Association members participate on 17 committees that meet regularly to handle issues relevant to the association and the real estate industry.
MAAR has operated a Multiple Listing Service (MLS) for its members since 1954. The MLS is a computerized inventory of residential listings, and it is available to members online 24 hours a day. At any given time, there are more than 8,000 listings in the MLS. In 2004, MAAR members had their most successful year on record with 17,178 home sales reported to the MLS, totaling $2.78 billion. In addition, MAAR maintains an online tax database called MAARdata.org that contains information from Shelby County appraisers, the Shelby County Register's office and the Shelby County Assessor's office.
MAAR offers a variety of real estate courses and seminars by award-winning experts. Several course offerings lead to professional specialty designations, such as GRI, CRS, ABR and CCIM. MAAR also maintains an Education Foundation that funds scholarships for members pursuing professional development and a student scholarship at the University of Memphis.
MAAR supports legislation that benefits real estate professionals through its registered lobbyist who works daily with the Tennessee General Assembly. The REALTORS® Political Action Committee (RPAC) is one of the nation's largest and most influential PAC. Members contribute voluntary funds to RPAC to support political candidates at the local, state and national level who are sensitive to private property rights and real property rights.
MAAR members subscribe to the National Association of REALTORS® Code of Ethics, and MAAR enforces compliance with the Code and conducts hearings for conflicts among association members and consumers. MAAR also conducts arbitration hearings for conflicts arising between association members and member firms.
MAAR members are actively involved in community service. In 2003, MAAR members completed their eleventh Habitat for Humanity house, and Habitat recently honored MAAR for its dedication with the 2003 Golden Hammer Award for Outstanding Community Partner. 2005 marks the 23rd year MAAR has sponsored the Youth Villages 5K Run/Walk, which has raised more than $1 million to provide assistance and develop new programs for troubled children and their families at Youth Villages.
